MSW Programs in Cali

Aside from UCBerk, are there any other good MSW programs that you can personally recommend in California? There are so many state schools. I wonder which ones have stronger MSW programs? It's impossible to tell by looking online (and living out East) so I'd love to hear from people who can offer some insight. Are there others that stand out for you in terms of training and faculty? Thanks!

this movie portrays quite well, i think, the struggles of someone who is living with mental illness.
also includes the struggles of the people in their life.
might want to check it out.

I'd love to work with couples and families.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some MFTs who would be open to having some converstions, maybe offer some directions to go in?

your MSW program recommendations, experiences, etc...

i've been working in the mental health field for 10+ years, first as a resident counselor, and now as a group home manager. i'm now feeling the Call to go to grad school and get an MSW. what would you recommend as a good school of social work?

i've taken 20-some credit hours in Psychology as a post-bach student, but i don't think i'd really like to stay on the track to getting a PhD in Psych. it seems more limiting to me and i'm not really interested in research as much as i'm interested in practice. and i've also heard that an MSW is much more versatile as far as finding a job. however, i did enjoy my psych classes. ideally, i'd like to attend a program with more of a psych feel to it.

p.s. my wife is from texas, so she is used to hot temps and doesn't really want to move anywhere too far north. we'd also like to live in a more progressive city / state. i know; picky picky picky! but, any suggestions, recommendations, thoughts, personal experiences?

friends wanting counselling

hey,

i have come across a couple of friends over the years who seem to want to get some sort of counselling experience from me.

im assuming this is something that other people also come across?

sometimes i catch it in time and let them know that my talking with them and being a friend is not counselling.

other times i don't quite catch it in time and realize later why the relationship got all weird.

it also seems to me that everyone expects counsellors to always be objective and super solid.
its like they forget that we are people to with personal lives and subjective friendships. we are not robots.

ultimately it has come down to keeping clear boundaries and sometimes losing a friendship to keep my professionalism.

too bad really but it is the reality of it i guess.

i would be happy to hear other's experiences.

MFT vs. LCSW California

I had originally thought i was going to get my MFT, but after reading so much information on LCSW it really sounds like it offers more potential. I was looking into Webster Universities program, mostly because i am currently in Florida, but moving to California in a year. This program offers a BA in Counseling MFT that i could finish once i got there (they have campuses in both places). If i do LCSW what can i do about starting a program in FL then moving? Is it worth it just to wait a year to start? Is there anything i can do to start now? What are good programs are good for LCSW in LA/OC area?
Thanks so much for your help,
Sarah

MFT Internships - do any of them pay?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of finishing my MA in Counseling Psych/Expressive Arts Therapy degree and am trying to get a head start on securing an internship as an MFTI. I'm discouraged that, from what I've heard and seen so far, many post-graduate MFT internships do not offer $$ compensation for your work. I'm not sure how people actually support themselves during this stage of pre-licensure and at the same time find ways to not burn out.

At any rate, any tips on 1) finding an internship; 2) finding an internship that might potentially pay something somewhat livable in the Bay Area; and 3) creative ways of financially supporting oneself should a paying internship not manifest would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!!

Experience An India Yoga Odyssey

Experience a Transforming India YOGA Odyssey
(February 21 to March 6, 2008)

Just imagine your airplane touching down at the India airport of your choice – Mumbai or Ahmadabad – on Thursday, February 21, 2008. Awaiting you at the airport is your guide, who will escort you by rail or taxi to your hotel accommodations in Surat City, Gujarat State. You will have arrived just in time to take in the World Yoga Championships, either as a participant or as a spectator. If anyone wishes to participate in the Championships the necessary registration forms can be downloaded at www.lifemission.org. The Championships run from February 22 though February 24. (The Championships were primarily founded as a means for encouraging youth worldwide to engage themselves in the ageless science of yoga for the betterment of body, mind and spiritual development in similar fashion that society worldwide encourages youth to participate in common sporting events.)

Following the Championships, you will be escorted to Malav Ashram for a five night stay, which includes three days of “hands on” yogic training under the expert guidance of Acharya Yogendradev, who has taught in North America, Taiwan, and India

And now – the Tours – you will tour the historic spiritual pilgrimage site of Kayavarohan and visit the Brahmeshwar Temple of Lord Lakulish (the 28th incarnation of Lord Shiva). You will spend 5 nights at a beautiful oceanside resort near the city of Div, overlooking the Indian Ocean with its miles of sandy beaches, and visit surrounding points of interest including the renowned Somnath Temple; a lion wildlife reserve, an ayurvedic clinic of a renowned ayurvedic physician where you will be able to observe the natural preparation of ayurvedic medicines and receive a free medical check-up. You will also have the opportunity to visit the temple complex at Rajrajeshwardham, where Lord Lakulish materialized in his divine body on January 29, 2007. Then – another great grace awaits you – you will have the rare opportunity of having darshan with the highly advanced yogi, Swami Rajarshi Muni.*

Now your yoga trip is reaching its end – on March 6, you will be escorted by your guide to your departure airport for your trip home – to reflect on and absorb your many yoga experiences of the past 2 weeks; the multitudes of wondrous Indian sites you've seen; the unmatched hospitality of its people and the many lasting new friendships you've made.

The cost per participant is $ 695.00 USD. This price does not include your transportation costs to and from India, which is entirely your responsibility, as are any required passports, visas etc. This price does include designated tour accommodations and meals in India, and all ground transportation to the Championships and touring sites in India, as well as ground transportation to and from airports at Mumbai or Ahmedabad. Any profits after all costs have been met will be directed to projects for the poor, including schools and hospitals. For further information, go to www.lifemission.org, or email: Acharya Yogendradev, ggvaghela@yahoo.com; or Dennis Konchak, lifema@telus.net; or Hans Splinter, Hsplinter@cogeco.ca.

* Swami Rajarshi Muni is the author of a vast library of nearly 100 titles in four different languages, including ten books in English. Some of the English titles are: Classical Hatha Yoga, Divine Body Through Yoga; Tenets for the Spiritual Life; Infinite Grace (The Story of My Spiritual Lineage), Awakening the Life Force, and Light from Guru to Disciple. For more information, check the Life Mission website www.lifemission.org and www.amazon.com under Rajarshi Muni

COAMFTE Accredited schools

Hello,
I am new to this site and I am in a Master's program for my MFT. Recently the program lost it's accreditation although they think it will work out. I am concerned about whether the school I choose will effect my job prospects. It is a private school and a good one for training as a counselor.
I am in CA and will be moving out of state when complete. I am considering applying to CSUN in Northridge for the MSW or MFT program. Can anyone tell me any specifics about their experience of moving out of state, looking for work and transitioning with thr MFT license? Also, Will they look at the school I went to or whether I am licensed as an MFT? I am confused about whether to jump into a MSW program or MFT program from a better known and respected school. I do plan to leave CA and wonder if anyone has studied here for MFT or MSW and has gone to another state who also went to a private school for training.
thanks so much,
Maryann

i have a friend ( my ex boyfriend) who gets a a little sudden shock when he thinks of somehting sexually stimulating. it wasnt something big but more of the same reaction your body would get if somebody scared you or perhaps less than that. but it was a sudden impulse movment. this only happened when we would be fooling around, doing nothing sexual and his mind would just be thinking things. it never happened when we actually performed sexual acts.

he has not told me if he has seen sombody about it.

MFT Degree -- A Worthwhile Endeavor?

At theage of 46, and having endured thirteen years with bipolar disorder, I am considering returning to school (New College in San Francisco) for grad work in an MFT program. Because of the expense of schooling, especially considering my age, I wonder if anyone out there has suggestions, comments, advice, etc. that might give me more insight into whether or not I really ought to pursue this degree. Do you feel the degree is worthwhile? I'd especially appreciate hearing from people studying or working in the S.F. Bay Area, if you're out there! But any feedback would be helpful, I think, at this point....

Office space for rent - Vancouver BC

Hi there,

I have found a great office space downtown in Vancouver for my counselling practice.

However, I will not be working there all day everyday so there are some times available for others to use the space.

It is a furnished office with a beautiful south facing view at the corner or Nelson and Howe in a quiet, professional building.

I will be using the office from noon onwards Tues - Fri.
This leaves Mondays and weekends, as well as mornings, available.

I would be interested in renting space out on an hourly, 1/2 day, or full day basis for reasonable rates.

Any practitioners interested should have current membership with a governing body and proper insurance.

Thanks, Janel

I'm a Psych grad student and a hypnotherapist trying to get my biz off the ground. I am looking for someone who would be willing to let me use their office for a cut of any sessions I happen to book. I'm just starting out so until I get momentum, I will probably only need the space for a couple of nights per month. Please send me a tribe or email me: maria@swiftchangehypnotherapy.com. Thanks :D

Mixing practice types (was MFT doing reiki)

Hi folks,

After reading the MFT doing reiki thread, I realized I have more research to do on what I'm thinking of...

I am interested in obtaining training in eastern psych (acupuncture), somatic psych (MFT or a Psy.D), and energy psychology (via ACEP approved programs). I'm already a CMT.

I already support my own mental/emotional/spiritual health with acupuncture, counseling, and energy work, and bodywork and can see ways that they would all integrate nicely.

My question is: do the powers that be for MFTs or Psychologists demand that folks with other scopes of practice keep them separate? Would they say I couldn't do acupuncture with my counseling clients?

projection and the transference phenomena

Carl Gustav Jung wrote prolifically on the phenomena of psychological transference in the context of the patient and therapist relationship. His book, "The Psychology of the Transference", outlines the various stages of this process as it reflects the spiritual alchemy of the Rennaisance through a series of eleven 14th Century northern European alchemical woodblock prints.

I am curious if any one here is a practicing psychotherapist with firsthand experience of this transference phenomena and how they use that process to further the diagnosis and treatment of their patients.

How to meet requirements for MFT or LPC in dif State with CA masters (WASC not CACREP) –predicaments

Hi There,
I am hoping some of you can please help me figure out some things. We are thinking about moving to OR, CO or NC and I am trying to determine how to help make the MFT or LPC licensing path go as smoothly as possible...definitely does not seem to be the easiest task.

I am trying to figure out a few things:
1) I have met all educational requirements for obtaining an MFT in CA. I am almost done with my hours and hope to take the first exam this fall. I have noticed that b/c my school was not CACREP i have to demonstrate educational equivalency. For the LPC I meet all requirements except two classes. I have other classes that they do not require like psychopharm and child tx and assessment. I am missing career and lifestyle development and appraisal. Does anyone know how tough licensing boards are on educational equivalency if the education received is accredited, demonstrates depth and breadth and meets core competencies?

With the MFT it is even tougher because my program chose to interweave amily, child and couple's treatment and theories into several classes. I only had one class that was devoted solely to marriage and family theories and tx. Does anyone think my other classes will pass for the educational requirements for the MFT in these states or should I focus on the LPC?

Does anyone know if there are territorial issues in these states (OR, NC, CO) between the LPC and MFT? Is it more helpful to have the MFT?

2)If I need to take these classes to meet educational equivalency, how would I do it if I am not degree seeking? I tried to take the career and lifestyle development class in the Bay area and no go...they would not allow me to take it since I was not in the program.

3) So many people say that the CA license is the way to go because of its strict requirements. Is it worth taking the CA tests if I will have to do all this work to be approved for testing in these other states? What do you think?

Finally…

4) Will i have to track down all of my supervisors to sign the state's paperwork to confirm my experiential/intern hours? In other words, will they accept the CA paperwork I already have signed? (probably not, but thought it was worth asking).

A lot of this comes down to how flexible the state licensing boards are…

Your insights and guidance would be so helpful. Thank you!!

Best,

Jill

Anyone have any thoughts on interning in a different state than where you received your degree? I am in an MFT program in CA and want to move to Oregon when I am done, but am not sure if I should just intern here and get licensed before moving, or move and intern there. Any thoughts? Is that something that is even possible if you are not yet licensed?

Working with Tramautic Brain Injury/Spinal Cord Injury Survivors, Couples, & Families

I have a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and desire to work with TBI & SCI survivors, couples, and their families. After a disappointingly mind numbing undergraduate experience in a poor school of SW I am hesitant to pursue an MSW at the same institution. As a single mother it's hard for me to pick up and move away from my family, the only support that my daughter & I have. The MA program in community counseling has an excellent reputation and offers a concentration in rehabilitation counseling. The Veteran Affairs Medical Centers usually hire MSWs to be polytrauma/SCI coordinators yet rehabilitation medical centers such as the Shepherd Catastrophic Rehabilitation Medical Center in Atlanta employs MSWs as admission coordinators and LPCs to counseling patients and their families.
In addition the the usual options I have considered pursuing the MSW advanced standing option, that typically takes one additional year post BSW and tailoring it to my career interests by taking several elective courses in rehabiliation counseling, counseling methods and theories, etc. And proposing an independent course that would allow me to work with a professional in the field & conduct research.

THE QUESTIONS ARE: 1) Which degree will provide the best training for working with the TBI/SCI populations? 2) Does the reputation/rankings (i.e. U.S. News & World Report) really matter?

Any comments, suggestions, or advice are welcome!!!! Thank you in advance!!!
MFT vs. MSW vs. LCSW?? NY vs. CA??

Hello all!

So here's the thing, if one is considering graduate educational opportunities in pursuit of becoming a practicing therapist, either via EAP or private practice, what exactly is the best, most well-rounded & geographically-flexible approach to take? I see that there are MFT programs, very few which seem to be affiliated with schools that I am familiar with which seems kinda weird to me. There also seem to be different governing or licensing bodies depending on where you live and, I imagine, where you plan to practice. On the other hand, the MSW programs do seem to be more widely available at better-known schools, but is that the degree or training one would even need to become a practicing therapist in private practice.

And how do the different accrediting agencies (BBS vs. AAMFT vs. COAMFTE) figure into it all??

Basically how does one make sure that once you've chosen your educational program, you are eligible for the proper accredidation (sp?) to practice what you want to practice where you want to practice??

<Whew!>

Did any of that make sense?

Thanks in advance for all your insight gang!

I'm posting to tell people about a new tribe I started specifically involving the LCSW test. This isn't about debating CBT vs psychodynamics or anything like that, it's just about passing the LCSW test.

Spanish for Counselors/Social Workers

If there's anyone in the Chicago area that would like to improve their Spanish speaking skills for their work, there's a program that offers a weekend immersion. I really need to do this myself. However, I've been wait-listed for quite a while because they seem unable to get enough people all at once. I'm hoping this'll help.

Here's the link. The dates aren't posted. But from what I was told, it'll likely be April 21& 22.

Please Help!!!

Hello!
My name is Andrea Straessle and I am a first semester MFT student at Hope International University in Fullerton, CA. As part of my Professional Ethics & The Law class, I am required to interview several licensed practitioners (psychologists, MFT's, social workers, or school counselors) to get their views on certain ethical issues. I am hoping that you will be able to assist me with this. I can assure you that your personal information will be kept confidential, and am able to provide whatever information necessary to assure you that I am in earnest and that this is for real. Please help and send me your responses off list as soon as you can!

These are the questions that I have for you. Please answer as completely as you can!

1. During your professional career have you experienced any major life crises (i.e., death of a loved one, loss of a job, divorce, addiction, abuse, etc.?)

2. For those who have experienced such life crises: During that time what adjustments to your professional work did you make, if any?

3. For those who have not experienced such a crisis: If you had experienced one of theses life crises, would you adjust your approach to your professional work during the time of the crisis. If so, how and why? If not, why not?

Situation 1: You are treating an individual diagnosed with AIDS. This individual has informed you that he is in, and has been in a long-term relationship. The client also has informed you of the name of his partner, with whom he lives.
In your most recent session your client informs you that not only is he engaging in unprotected sex with his lover, but that he has not informed his lover that he has AIDS. What do you do? Do you inform the lover?

Situation 2: You have been seeing a couple for marriage counseling. You receive a subpoena for your records on the case from one partner's lawyer. What do you do? Do you respond to the subpoena? If so, how? If not, why not?

Thank you very much for your responses and I look forward to reading them!

Is there someone out there who could help me out with a job in Northern Alabama? Sorta the Mountain Region.... Let's say Florence, Da Shoals, Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, etc...

I'm a Dutch registered Art Therapist (bachelor) and qualified to do so many other different things. The university where I graduated (HAN-University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands) had specific focus on psychology and intensive therapy. I've worked in many psychiatric settings so far, including geriatrics and rehab-clinics. I also have a private practice at home (counselling, life-coach, individual art therapy).
I would also like to find me a job where I'd be able to use my Dutch language skills. Perhaps be a mediator, interpreter or translator.
Besides being a therapist I'm a (stone/clay) sculptor as well. I'm qualified to teach a variety of art classes or develop an art program when needed.
For references or further inquiries you can contact my agent in Killen, Alabama.
My resume and portfolio are available on request.

genuine-ness & authenticity

Hi! I'm no longer a practitioner, and am somewhat rusty on the purely academic side of this subject matter, but I'm about to get into a discussion with a friend on what it means to be genuine, and what it means to be authentic. How would you go about broaching these topics with a lay-person? What are the crucial bits for the person to grasp when considering the quality of being genuine vs the quality of authenticity?

How to Handle a Bad Test?

My nephew, the Eagle Scout: He's pretty well off the scale when it comes to Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent. Raised by super-strict evangelical Christian parents, he wouldn't think of eating dinner, even at McDonald's, without praying first, and dating non-Christian girls is pretty well out of the question . . . last year, he left for a park job in rural Nevada, finding time to work as a volunteer ambulance driver and helping out as a substitute teacher at the local Indian Reservation . . . we're talking about someone with a fierce determination to do good . . . aside from that, no behavioral problems that I know of . . .

Recently he applied for a federal job which required a psychological evaluation . . . which he flunked. . . asked, for example, if he ever lied, he said "no" . . . tested for common phobias (darkness, heights, etc.), he said he had none at all . . . the evaluating psychologist concluded that he was being dishonest, that he had cheated the test . . . I find it more likely that the evaluating psychologist had little experience with people of this kind . . . psychologists tend to be worldly intellectuals . . .

I cannot absolutely rule out that my nephew has some deep-seated psychological problems that nobody has yet noticed . . . but it seems more probable that the fault was in the test and not in my nephew . . . this will unfortunately preclude him from employment with the federal government, for which he has has studied and trained quite a long time . . .

How do you handle a case like this? I don't know of any procedure for appealing a bad test, and I fear that repeating the same test would only lead to a similar result . . .

focusing and assessment in therapy

hi out there

i am looking for some words of wisdom from any therapists and counsellors out there on the relationship between using Gendlin's focusing and doing a client assessment

I am currently torn because as I learn about being a counsellor I come to understand that it seems to be a general principle that people's current problems in interpersonal relationships are a patterned problem that has a history. I call it my belief in unfinished business, incomplete experiences of the past that are relived in our current relationships. Call it projection, call it what you will.
The reason I am torn is because while I recognize that value of doing this sort of assessment, I also feel hesitant in doing assessments, hesitant because they seem to put me into a detective mode rather than allowing and trusting the clients self-healing process to naturally occur.

I am wondering if any therapists out there play around with the focusing approach, say once the client finds a 'handle' for their present felt sense, and IF the client connects it to a current relationship in their life, then maybe exploring this to find out if there are any people or events from a person's past that this felt sense seems strongly connected to. Or maybe you have another way of doing something like this.

Anything you can offer is a gift towards my development as a body-centered therapist trusting in the human self-healing process, while conducting deep and thorough transformative work

in love, gratitude, and play,

Can someone tell me why Social Work is so much "better" it seems? What is social work all about? How are clinical social workers trained in psychotherapy? What does a typical grad program in Social Work consist of?

We are just now getting licensure in New York for Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors, and it seems like social workers have a monopoly up here, and I am trying to figure it out.

Thanks for the help!

Dear friends & whomever might be interested..

Meriana de Jager and Ty Gesyuk would like to invite you to a bi-weekly poly/open relationships support group, beginning Sunday, November 5th from 6-8 PM, in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco.

We believe that each individual has an inner knowing of what relationship models fits them best so this group is being formed in order to help you create more choices in relationship.
We will:
* discuss the difference between polyamory and open relationships.
* share concerns around why different models of relating hasn't worked for you.
* focus on specific issues such as jealousy management, the negotiating of boundaries, etc.
* ascertain which models of relating is best for you and learn how to assert and manage each one.
* discuss and provide information, tools and skills about how to create more options for either polyamory or open relationships.
* illuminate the ways in which we stop ourselves from getting what we want.
* offer integration techniques for successfully negotiating differences in relationship models.

We are committed to creating a safe and comfortable environment for communication, innovation and experimentation. There will be plenty of room for discussions and exchange of experiences, as well as guided exercises and structured interactions.

This group is open to individuals and couples with all kinds of experiences with poly/& open relationships from any sexual orientation. You are welcome whether you are already in or contemplating an open/polyamorous relationship, or you are much more monogamous with a polyamorously inclined partner.

THE FACILITATORS:

Meriana de Jager earned her Masters in Counseling Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies and is currently working at New Perspectives Center for Counseling. She has been working with individuals and couples for 5 years. Some of the psychotherapeutic modalities she has extensive training and practice in are Psychodynamics, Cognitive Behavioral, Hakomi, RCS and Body-centered psychotherapy.
Meriana feels strongly about each persons right to create for themselves the life they truly desire. She is passionate about helping people find, define and be empowered in what is true for them and is committed to helping them actualize it in their lives.

TY GESYUK has worked as a personal coach for many years and has interviewed thousands of couples on what makes a healthy relationship last. His approach in coaching couples is rooted in the oriental wisdom of nature. Apart from working as a personal coach he has an extensive background in yoga, meditation, dance, massage, martial arts, nutrition and personal training. He draws from modern and ancient systems to teach, in simple terms, a language of health. His core belief is that health equals freedom. After observing people suffer with health concerns and in a prison-of-sorts from their pain, he vowed to do something about it. Since then he has founded three centers of health, taught over a hundred thousand yoga students, and massaged at least twenty thousand people.

Address: 298 Laidley St. @ Miguel
in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco

RSVP is recommended

This first gathering on November 5th will be donation based. If you feel this information will help you to the point of wanting to continue to come to these gathering, in the future there will be a sliding scale of $20-$50. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Call Meriana at 415-713-3338 or Ty at 973-495-5996 if you have any questions. Hope to see you there!

Does anyone have some experience in counseling jail/prison inmates and/or their families? What interventions do you find that work? With the high incidence of drug abuse, domestic violence and mental illness it is difficult to have hope with this population. But many of them, once sober, start having hope... Comments anyone?

Ok its like this. I cam across a dysfunction and i really don't want to get into all the reasons why i think that term is misleading but here is the thing. Nasiccistic Personlity Disorder. Its got such a lovely title and can be used in a court of law to get a man of scot free and typically insults the natural existence of the human mind. Its symptoms include an over inflated thought of ones self and their ability, unrealistic and unrealised over confidence in themselves and thier abilities, confusion, the need for special treatment cold arrogant snobbish and requires doses of criticism to help reduce his hollowness inside. Often withdrawn,in pain rage and full of disdain.

Does anybody see what i see........hahahahah that is meant to be a punchline :)

But seriously if you abuse your pet it will be withdrawn from you, full of rage and exhibiting disdain. So why not in humans. Criticisim as a cure for overzealous belief on ones self. PLease tell me you guys don't have kids.Over confidnence and need for special treatment....hahah i laugh, i worked as a waiter. Most people fall into that catergory. And once again treating your kids like pets will still not remove this. Arrogant ,snobbish obviously the product of a rich family and many had a stint in a UK background school. But here in likes the conundrum. To fix this the perosn has to admit the symptoms as a fault then the counsellor goes to the rigorous process of reestalishing "confidence" controlling arrogance with subliminal critcism and if need be medication to control rage. Now lets us this same mechanism to fight cancer shall we. control the elements and the you can live with the disease. All for a recommended price per bottle. Did i just hear someone say email scam.
Your "learned" thought would be greatly appreciated

I am interested in writing a collaborative and cooperative unabridged textbook on psychology. Minus propaganda, minus psychology history, minus psychology personalities,
and minus the usual ego bickering that is usually presented.

Anybody here interested in that?

What would you list as major chapters?

Any thoughts on how to write a better textbook?

Looking to do Kids hours for MFT

Hi,
I 'm having hardest time finding an internship site where I can do my kids hours that are required for California MFT license. I have completed more than 2500 hrs of supervised hours toward MFT license at my current job in California, and now I am ready to tackle kids hour (500hrs minimum). I have been checking job posting, asking around, and sending resumes to various agencies that provide services to child, family or adolescents for a while, but so far I had no luck.

I admit that I don't have much experiences working with kids or family because my post graduate experiences are all with adult population with substance abuse and mental illness, and most of places want someone who has already had expereinces for one year or more working with kids. I'm also trying to find a part-time (10-20hrs) position in order to keep my health insuarance through my current employer. It does not matter if it's paid or not as long as the site provides supervision toward my MFT licensure.

I'm very reliable and a fast learner with 6+ years of solid clinical experiences working with the low functioning populations with dual diagnosis populations. I think that a lot of my skills (ex. setting firm limits with those with personality disorder & SA issues) are very much applicable to working with adolescents.

I'd appreciate if anyone has any ideas as to where to look.

Emotional Support Session Trading Community

I am posting to let you know about a community I helped create call Phone Buddies (www.phone-buddies.com) that allows women to trade free half hour phone counseling sessions with each other. It isn't actual psychotherapy -- we use peer counseling techniques like focusing, or compassionate listening, etc. It is definitely more structured than just chatting. People request sessions when they really need emotional support.

A lot of the members are professional counselors who want a confidential source of convenient and free support for themselves and are willing to offer the same to others in exchange. If it seems like something that would benefit you and to which you would also like to contribute your ability to support others, then I hope you'll visit the site and join the community.

It's a donation supported community, so can be free if you don't want to contribute (though the sign up system requires at least a penny donation as a technical limitation we are working to overcome). Members generally chip in about $10 as a one-time fee then trade an unlimited number of sessions. I've had two sessions myself and found both to be incredibly helpful.

(P.S. There is one man in the community but in general it is a community of women, which helps to keep it from spilling over into a dating scene. It would be a real violation of trust for someone to hit on someone they just counseled, so by keeping it primarily a mono-gender community we try to greatly reduce the likelihood of that occuring.)

question

I have just found out that my 9-year-old son's dad has stomach cancer. I am blown away. i am not with my son's dad, but my son has an active relationship with his dad, staying over his house at least one night a week.

We are waiting to find out what his prognosis is after they perform surgery and remove his stomach. Once they are inside they will see how advanced the cancer is.

His dad has been in the hospital for over a week, but he doesn't want my son to come visit him there, as he is scared it will frighten my son. My son knows nothing yet of this illness.

I have never counseled children in a medical setting. What in your opinion is the best way to proceed with this? is it best to let the child know his dad has cancer? Maybe it is best just to tell him his dad is sick and will need an operation?

I told my ex I would defer to his wishes on how to proceed with this, because it is his illness and I want him to be empowered to make his own descisions. However, i did encourage him to let my son come to visit him in the hospital. So far he hasn't taken me up on it, but he said he was seriously considering it.

hi there~

I am a california native, currently a 2nd year MA student from Naropa University in Wilderness Therapy/Transpersonal Psychology. I am longing to get back to my home of the Bay Area, and work as an MFT Trainee-- so I am searching for a site currently.
Any help or resources are much appreciated-- I have been researching diligently, but am currently at a dead end. Ideally, becuase I am studying the relationship to the nature world as part of the healing process, a site that would allow/support/encourage such "eco" or wilderness therapies would be best- but is not essential. Basically, I need a certain number of clinical hours and weekly sessions with a supervisor-- in the Oakland/Berkeley area.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!
~shana~

Licensing Reciprocity

Does anyone know how licensing reciprocity between states works? I'm a LCSW in NY, considering moving to North Carolina or thereabouts in a couple of years. I don't want to take tests to get licensed in another state if I can help it. I've been out of grad school almost 30 years and I'm sure the curriculum has changed somewhat!

Has anyone moved and resumed their career in another state?

Hey there...
Does anyone out here have any perspective or experience in working with clients with MPD??
Specifically I am looking at how to work with clients who are also parents, dealing with the children of parents who have MPD, and the alternate caregiver's role in this.... What role does the alternate caregiver play in relation to the therapist...? What interactions/disclosure should there be in relation to the therapist and alternate caregiver...?

Any experiences you can share would be wonderful....

Anyone attend the Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference in Anaheim, California last week. It was pretty amazing. Only happens every five years. Got to see Albert Ellis (father of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) and he's still going strong. He announced that due to some politics, he is being forced out of his own institute and needs support.
For more information you can check out his site
http://albertellis.info/

Would also like to hear what others thought of the conference.

"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is akind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

-- Albert Einstein

To grow in consciousness, we expand our perspectives on life. So how do we do that? The more we work with the universal -- the concept of unity and wholeness, the more everything makes sense. Parts have meaning when they are understood to be parts of a bigger picture.

Consciousness is all about relationships -- especially how the lower relates to the higher and how the darkness can exist within the light. Hold and experience contradictions like anger with love. Let opposites coexist in you without choosing one over the other.

"Higher consciousness, enLIGHTenment, comes from meaningful experiences and lessons passed with the understanding that there truly is only one law - the Law of Love. When one leads a life expressing this belief, the mind and heart begin to open to new realities, and other dimensional truths become known."
EdS Inquiry

I'm about to graduate from a psychology masters program in which I could've taken courses to meet licensure requirements. I chose not to do this as I had planned on entering into a counseling psychology PhD program. It was hard for me to find a program in which I liked every aspect. So, I've decided to take a year off and work while researching other schools/options. It seems as though an EdS program would allow me to take just licensure classes and would only be about 27 credits, 1 year. Then, I could enter into a PhD program in another field so that I can be a professor as well as practice. This is my ultimate goal. But, my question is, from a professional standpoint, how is an EdS degree viewed? Also, any other thoughts or information about EdS degrees would be most helpful.

Much thanks! -jen-

I have a BAchelor of Social Work from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. I graduated the last year they offered this degree and they had dropped their SW accrediation. So in order to be licensed I need to work under a MSW or other mentaql health professional for a year. I am good at working with people and want to stay in this domain. However, without a license it is impossible to get a job. I am willing to relocate anywhere. And plan to attend graduate school eventually for MSW or Counselling degree. Anyone got any suggestions? Or need an assistant?

Hello All,

I have just joined this tribe and am looking forward to getting to know everyone. I am the President/Founder of Psychjourney http://www.psychjourney.com

I am seeking guests for our two Internet Radio Shows, The Psychjourney Audio Book Club http://www.psychjourneybookclub.com and the Psychjourney Audio Cafe http://www.psychjourneyaudiocafe.com

Each radio show consists of a 30-40 minute interview by telephone which is converted into an audio file, and a promo page about the guest on our website and blog. I send each guest the code to post the audio of the interview on his or her own website, blog or ezine and a copy of the audio file.

The book club and audio cafe are another tool for meeting Psychjourney's mission of building a cyber-bridge between health seekers and mental health professionals. Both are provided as a free service.

If you are interested, please contact me by email. I will look forward to hearing from you.

Can you socialize with them? Do you acknowledge knowing them , when you see them in public?

I know you can't date them, of course, but beyond that...

Even though from my previous experience I know that the chances of a positive outcome are meager, I turn to my fellow tribes(wo)men for help :). I graduated in May from a fancy college, with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Anthropology, and with ideas that it will be so easy to find a job. Right....

I have been trying to find one since May, without much success. The main problem is that I am not a US citizen and as such am only eligible for looking for employment that is in my field of study, Psychology.

I tried everything I could think of in Philadelphia and wider Tri-State area (PA, NY, DC): university research programs, university random programs, mental health institutions, counseling centers, addiction centers, eating disorders centes, schools, kindergartens, NFPs, APA, hospitals, medical centers, private practices, etc.... And now I am at a dead end.

Please, if you know of anything, anywhere, please let me know. Forward me the contact info. Anything will help. I would be willing to relocate pretty much anywhere within the US. Please people, I am running out of hope and ideas here....

Thanks.

Hi all,

I am in search of office space to rent preferably in North San Diego, but I would drive for the right space.

Looking for a counseling office with a positive individual or group that I can refer to and that would benefit from having a in house Grief Recovery Counselor .

My needs are a small office for private clients, and ideally a group room for about 20-30. I facilitate day and evening grief recovery groups.

More about who I am and what I do can be found at:

If you have space or know a group that might benefit, please contact me.

Thank you,

I'm looking for art therapists to give some insight on the field. I'm planning on getting a masters in A.T. but am not sure about investing that kind of $. I'm wondering if the job is worth a 50k debt or if I should just get an MSW instead, and work art into it on my own. Any advise would be great!

Here is my question:
What do you all think of polyamory. It seems to me that MOST I find in the poly community are unstable and do not form good attactments, but then it seems to me that they can not ALL be like that....
anyway, really confused:

I am a counselor in California with the hope that the new bill will pass providing a license for professional counselors in this state (one of the last two).

I am applying to the Registry here in California, because it seems that this is the first step. I am short a few classes and will be taking them at Santa Clara University.

After completion I need to pass the NCE. Has anyone gone through this process, or taken the exam? If so do you recommend a particular study guide....I graduated 10 years ago so my memory is abit grey, especially around stats and research. Please pass along any tips to prepare me for this event.

the fee in psychotherapy

While I know it's a very subjective and individual thing, what would seem to be a reasonable/healthy/responsbible percentage of one's monthly income to spend on therapy? Considering the price of it, I feel for everyone there is a limit at which the cost of devoting a large chunk of one's income on therapy eclipses the many benefits, and I suppose I'm trying to figure out what that limit is for me. I'm thinking of this in terms of the notion that one shouldn't spend more than about 30% of their income on housing, and feeling that spending close to or beyond that on therapy would be difficult to justify. Thoughts? And I apologize if I should be posting this in another tribe, since I'm not a therapist myself. Thanks :)

Insurance question

I don't know if anyone here is in private practice, but I have a question about insurances.
I met with a client who said she had Health Net, she brought her card to the first meeting (looks as tho she just wanted information and will not be returning to therapy) and I took her sub. number, etc. When I called Health Net they said that she is ineligible - ie: has no coverage. I called the client and she has not returned my call...

I originally called Health Net , before the session, and they said have the client call to confirm that I am an in-network provider, which I was. They didn't say anything about confirming eligibility prior to the first meeting.

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I am considering going back to school to become licensed to practice psychotherapy. I am trying to decide between an MFT or an LCSW track. I think I ahve decided that a PHD/PsyD is too much work/$ for not enough difference in pay or opportunity. I am primarily interested in a private psychotherapy practice. I am already trained in Hakomi body-centered therapy.

I am wondering if anyone from either path could talk with me--I would love it if I could call you--or I can give you my # if you email me.

Some questions:

Is it true that more insurance companies cover those w/ an LCSW than an MFT?

Has anyone done a state school program for an MFT track? (instead of the expensive yet popular alternative ones like CIIS, JFK--just can't afford them!)

Any information about what happens if you move out of state w/ an MFT? What do you have to do to be validated in other states?

Any info as to the differences in difficulty/workload between the 2 programs? I know there is a written exam at the end of the MFT track for licensure (used to be oral I guess)--what about for an LCSW?

Thanks--I appreciate and info that anyone can offer and if you would be willing to talk--please send me a message.

Anyone trained in Hakomi therapy in the Santa Cruz area?

I am looking for others in the Santa Cruz area who are trained in Hakomi therapy, to trade practice sessions and possibly start a peer group for practice and supervision. I was trained through Boulder (now called Sensorimotor Psychotherapy), which included the Trauma training segment. Would especially love to connect with others from that training, but all Hakomi-ites are welcome!

Please reply to me directly by clicking on my profile as I probably won't keep up with the discussion thread as well. Thanks.

i quit my job 6 months ago, took the summer off, and am looking for work. it has been really discouraging trying to find a job that interests me and pays enough. what with most jobs having an online application process, there is often no way to know what kind of competition i am facing -- i just sit and (usually) hear nothing back. i have applied at places like kaiser, ucsf/sf general, and children's hospital/oakland.
i have an MSW, am done with my clinical hours toward licensure, and am studying for the exams. i am interested in doing clinical work with children or adults, hopefully in a benefited position that pays more than $20/hour! i have experience working with kids with serious emotional disturbance, kids and adults with addictions and dual diagnoses, and doing individual/couples work in a family support agency.
what do others do to make a living in this field?
any suggestions for my job search?
words of encouragement?

Humanistic Psych. study for future career in private practice?

I have the same question regarding becoming a licensed psychologist/counselor on a national level. I have been looking into programs (graduate level) on a track to have my own private practice. Is there anyone out there who is on the humanistic/transpersonal track that became fully employed with private practice? What course did you take? I am considering Marriage Family Counseling, Clinical Psych., and Social Work as MA degrees that I may be able to work on.

Do I need a PhD to become licensed? or do I just need a MA to practice, legally. I've been looking at websites and potential universities for hours and the information is overwhelming.

What sort of clients ...

I'm considering whether (1) to continue on with my academic career, with the intent of combining spiritual / philosophical counselling and youth work part-time, or (2) to devote myself entirely to training and practice in counselling.

I'm increasingly interested in counselling work, but one of the barriers I have to committing fully to it is the sense that I probably won't be able to work entirely with the client group of my choosing. I suspect that more-or-less balanced, spiritual / personal growth-orientated clients are probably a thin layer of cream on a barrel of much more shaken milk, and that I'd end up making my living chopping wood -- either because of the rough shape of my clients, limitations on time, or my own inaptitudes with certain populations -- with much fewer opportunities to carve masks than I imagine.

I appologise if this question sounds crude or insensitive. I do value a wide range of social work and mental therapy; I'm just trying to get a sense of the realities of the field, and to gauge my own aptitudes and interests against them. I find myself caught between a love of research and teaching and a desire to work with populations outside of academia and employ methods that don't fit into lecture halls -- wilderness, somatic, spiritual, artistic. It may be that some combination between teaching and counselling is best for me, but before I head off in that direction I'd like to learn more about what sort of combinations of client types full-time counsellors find themselves working with.

Do you find yourself working primarily with the seriously mentally ill? with youth or with adults? with substance abusers? with people with family and relationship difficulties? with clients interested in spiritual and self-growth? with people uundergoing career transitions? with the physically ill or dying? ...

Many thanks. :)

Tax deductible items for Psychotherapists

HI all -
I just started a private practice last year and was wondering if

1) anyone had any tips/ideas on little-known deductibles for taxes . For example, I read somewhere that my own psychotherapy is tax deductible... I didn't know that. I am working at a loss for last year, as i only earned about $450 from the business, and paid out waaaaaaaaaaaay more than that starting it up!

2) can anyone recommend a good tax person that works with therapists in the north bay area.

Also, how many people in private practice have a business license for the town they work in?
Is there a tribe for "starting a private practice" that anyone knows about?

thanks~!

Has anyone had direct contact with any specific agencies that have requested volunteer counsellors to work with Tsunami victims in Asia?

Would appreciate any accurate info, I have contacted several in Thailand and Sri Lanka and had only a couple of responses so far.

Humanistic Schools

I'm aware of humanistic and transpersonally orientated counselling or clinical psychology programmes at CIIS, Pacfica, Naropa, Sonoma, Saybrooke, Antioch, the Union Institute, and some religious universities. What other programmes have you folks come across? I'm particularly interested in hearing about eclectic programmes that include a large slice of humanistic training and doctoral programmes that don't require extensive undergraduate work in experimental psychology.

how to begin a practice without a license?

I graduated from a university in Philadelphia about 10 years ago with a MS in counseling psychology. In between then and now I have worked as a social worker and then lived at Esalen Institute for two and a half years.

While at esalen I studied gestalt process and awareness practice. I moved to Santa Cruz about a year ago. Upon arriving here I found it really difficult to find a job in the field. I eventually ended up working for an adult residential facility. After a year of working here I am realizing that what I really want to manifest is my own practice.

However my degree does not meet Ca requirements for a MFT intern.....I am feeling a bit stuck in how to pursue my goals of creating my own business without a license. The thought of returning to school for another masters degree does not sit well with my motivation nor with my wallet.

I am curious if anyone has had success in creating a practice without the title, without the ability to bill insurance......any suggestions would be greatly accepted........rain or does anyone know about grants available for graduate work....

Hi there,

Does anyone have experience with somatic psychology? I'm wondering about the future of the field, good ways to get started with the career, etc.

I've just been reading the Catholic Catechism and it's really interesting how much of the catholic faith is centered in health, positive choices, and unconditional love.
Any thoughts?
