Hi all,
I'm in the process of finishing my MA in Counseling Psych/Expressive Arts Therapy degree and am trying to get a head start on securing an internship as an MFTI. I'm discouraged that, from what I've heard and seen so far, many post-graduate MFT internships do not offer $$ compensation for your work. I'm not sure how people actually support themselves during this stage of pre-licensure and at the same time find ways to not burn out.
At any rate, any tips on 1) finding an internship; 2) finding an internship that might potentially pay something somewhat livable in the Bay Area; and 3) creative ways of financially supporting oneself should a paying internship not manifest would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!!

Re: MFT Internships - do any of them pay?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 4:39 PMKrista You can find jobs that pay. Look in the paper under counselors. My intern makes over $17 an hour. I made about $14.50 5 yrs ago as an intern. Not great but somewhat liveable. Better than nothing.
Larkin st. is usually looking for counselors.

Re: MFT Internships - do any of them pay?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 9:39 PMAll of my internship hours were paid. Granted, I wasn't paid a lot but I was paid enough to survive albeit while racking up some credit card debt. I interned in an outpatient clinic for a few hours and in a crisis and transitional residential program for adults. I've also worked in group homes (RTCs) with children and teens and know some of them offer hours. I do have friends who are struggling more than I did, I think because they are focused on the 50 minute hour type of internship. If you are at all interested in different populations and milieu therapy this might be an avenue to pursue. I found the experience really provided a great clinical base for me. -

Tue, January 17, 2006 - 9:57 PMthanks for everyone's responses! gives me a bit more optimism to hear. actually, i'm not interested in pursuing private practice internships at the moment - mileu settings are more my speed right now...so i'm hopeful!
thanks! -

Tue, January 17, 2006 - 11:30 PMKrista,
Definitely sign up if you haven't already on to www.socialservice.com
They have regular posting of jobs for both lisenced and pre-lisenced mfts/msw on a daily basis which they will e-mail you if you post a resume with them. I've found them to be pretty up to date on the job opportunities.
However, I too have come to discover internships do not pay well. I've had to work a part-time job doing some entirely unrelated along with my paid internship to make ends meet.
Good luck. -

Re: MFT Internships - do any of them pay?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 11:57 AMHey...thanks for that website. I'm finishing a masters/MFT program this spring & need to find a paid internship, too. I'm in Ventura, CA (about 1 1/2 hours north of Los Angeles). If anyone out there has more recommendations for paid internship connections out this way, please post 'em!

Re: MFT Internships - do any of them pay?
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 12:39 PMSacramento, CA has many paid internships for MFTI's and ASW's. There are places that do pay you full salary while you gather your hours. Ive heard it varies from county to county however.
Good luck!

Re: MFT Internships - do any of them pay?
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 9:30 PMWe weren't allowed to accept money at my school for our internships. Student loans and grad assistantships on the side is what we all had to do. . . -

They are talking about the internship period AFTER graduation, when you need to collect over 3,000 post graduate hours in order to be eligible for licensure.

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:30 AMI know this is an old post but it is one of the first helpful sites I found when trying to find internships. I'm still searching but I've also made a site that lists a lot of the jobs/internships I've found in the Bay Area. I was surprised that there was no good list of what was available so I've been trying to make one. If you have any info please send me an email or a comment on the page below.
