MSW Programs in Cali

topic posted Sat, October 27, 2007 - 8:09 AM by  Ashley
Aside from UCBerk, are there any other good MSW programs that you can personally recommend in California? There are so many state schools. I wonder which ones have stronger MSW programs? It's impossible to tell by looking online (and living out East) so I'd love to hear from people who can offer some insight. Are there others that stand out for you in terms of training and faculty? Thanks!

There are a lot of MSW programs in California. I graduated from Sacramento State University in 1993 and have done just fine in the world of social work.

I didn't get my MSW in CA but when I lived in L.A. and worked there I met many social workers who got their degrees at USC and loved it there. I don't know anything about the program, though.

I went to Cal Hayward mostly because I heard it's nearly impossible for a white woman to get into SF State's program. I've heard some good things about San Jose. U.C. Berkeley loves research, research, research.

Because the degree is regulated by the BBS, any accredited school will have a similar program. I'm in an MFT program at a private school because I don't want to deal with the BS that can come with a state school (larger class sizes, not getting classes, etc). It all depends on what YOU are looking for.

thanks everyone! i'm looking for an affordable school that will not send me spiraling into debt for the rest of my life. been there, done that in undergrad. i'm a bit wiser now. i was surprised at how expensive ucberk is for residents despite it being a "state school." this is why i inquired about other msw programs in cali. thanks for your feedback!

If afford ability is important I would encourage you to look at the central valley of California rather than the big Cities along the coast. The central valley including Sacramento down to Bakersfield have MSW programs and the cost of living is much more affordable.

I am currently finishing my first year at CSU Bakersfiled and wanted to warn you NOT to go here. There is a huge difference in the quality of teachers in different schools. I am trying to transfer and am even willing to lose a few classes in the process. CSU Fullerton was awesome in my undergrad and i know they just started an MSW program (not accredited just yet..but will be soon). I would keep to the big cities. Southern Ca has some great schools. There is USC, UCLA, Northridge, Fullerton, San Diego...all have good MSW programs that are'nt going to break the bank! Good Luck.

CSUS (Sacramento State) has a pretty diverse MSW program; they have electives in AOD counseling, DSM-IV TR Diagnostics, Child and Family Practice, Geriatrics/Gerontology, Hospital Social Work, Personal Pupil Services (Social work in schools), Community Advocacy, Grant writing, research, policy, etc. They offer an MSW program with different focus such as Title-IV-E Child Welfare, Mental Health, School Social Work, Community advocacy, etc. CSUS is an accredited school for social work. The faculty are great and very knowledgeable about the global impact of social work issues as mentioned above. The DSM-IV class is one of the best classes that they offer, and if you are interested in the focus of Title IV-E Child Welfare or the Mental Health Program, you can get a stipend for $18,500.00 a year to attend school and have a guaranteed job when you graduate the MSW program.

At CSUS, a full-time MSW program, your first semester you will have five classes and two days of field internship a week (16 hours). Your second year, you will have five classes and three days of field internship a week (24 hours). Field internships can vary, you may be placed in a hospital, school, CPS, mental health, foster family agency, or a non-profit agency which focuses on social work, counseling, child welfare, and mental health. In CA, you cannot apply for licensure(LCSW) until yo complete your MSW degree; therefore you will need to accrue your hours after you graduate, which are 3200 hours of direct contact with clients and 104 hours of supervision meetings with an LCSW or MFT. Although, most people recommend an LCSW, for the diverse knowledge of social work practice and therapy/counseling.

I am a first year MSW student at California State University, Fresno and so far I am happy with the education that I am receiving. Tuition is reasonable and the cost of living is lower than here than in other areas in the state.
  • Ok. I am currently attending USC's MSW program and am graduating in May 2008. I love it. I have grown and flourished soo much. It's expensive and hard to get in to but worth it! Seriously, what I love about Social work in particular, is that you can do ANYTHING. The second year of Grad. school is split up into concentrations. At USC
    They are:
    1. Mental Health(Clinincal Practice),
2.Families and Children (specializing with this pop., child services, etc.),
    3.COPA (Advocacy/Policy/ creating programs),
    4.Health (Hospital Social Work)
    5. Work and life (Social work in the workplace, finding a balance for work/life.
My concentration is mental Health and I am seeing clients on a clinincal basis. Basically, I see client's every week at my internship and have the exact expectations placed on me as the other MFT or PsyD. interns. They call this psychiatric social work. With an MSW, you have the option of working on any level or platform you prefer. I think its versatility is its charm. Social workers tend to look at situations through a broad lense and are known to be advocates as well. I chose the more clinical route. I hope to work toward my LCS, right after graduation because I want to start private practice. If you chose the clinical route of social work, you are learnng the same as MFT or PsyD. However with social work there is nothing binding you to do that. With an MSW you can decide to work with social policies, work in family services, or work for a corporation..if you wanted to. The scope is broad.

There are pros and cons to each program. Turlock, CA has a good program at CSU Stanislaus. They are more social/research oriented and less clinical, but they are moving in the clinical direction little by little. They also have an awesome MFT program that is BBS accredited.

Hello, I am new to this post but I really appreciate the great sharing of info. I'm finishing a BA in Psych and considering going onto CSULB for their MSW program (Long Beach). I'd really appreciate any input as to their program if anyone's familiar with the school.
      Thanks.
