interning in another state

Anyone have any thoughts on interning in a different state than where you received your degree? I am in an MFT program in CA and want to move to Oregon when I am done, but am not sure if I should just intern here and get licensed before moving, or move and intern there. Any thoughts? Is that something that is even possible if you are not yet licensed?

If you can get a job that will hire unlicensed people, and you can get appropriate supervision either on site or through an outside supervisor, there's no reason not to. I got my MFT PhD in New York but moved to Denver for a job where I got my PhD internship/MFT licensure hours.

I would say get licensed in CA before you move. CA has one of the most stringent licensing requirements in the US and if you get your license here it is far easier to get your license in another state. If you just have your degree they may require more of you than if you received your license in another state. Every time one of my classmates has asked this question of the instructors/advisors/fellow internees the answer is always the same.

You can always check out the licensing requirements for Oregon and see if they have an opinion one way or another, but again, EVERYTHING that I have been told strongly suggests getting your first license in the state that you received your degree in.

also--know that the LPC (licensed professional counselor license) is likely to pass through the congress in the next couple of years. mft folks will then be grandfathered in and you will be able to practice under that license in any other state.
